For most people, their best work doesn’t happen all at once. It’s a long process of trial and error, borne out through hours of careful consideration. This consideration absolutely constitutes work, regardless of how anyone else perceives it. What’s important is doing the best you can, which means doing whatever you have to do in order to produce your best work, even and especially if that means subverting expectations.
There are always people expecting more, faster, who have no conception of the kind of effort it requires to do what you’re trying to do. Forget them. They are impossible to satisfy. All they understand is more.
